What are the Republicans Planning?

Items of Interest

Today’s Washington Post had a most interesting article regarding the House Representative from Virginia, Eric Cantor. As some of you may know, Mr. Cantor is the number 2 leader in the Republican House Leadership. He is also one of the most vociferous mouthpieces on the floor of the House. His commentary for the President has been along the lines of the Tea Party and 9-12 Plan fruitcakes. Death Panels, Kill Grandma, Socialist President Obama, etc.

Yesterday, in Richmond something happened that can either bring a ray of sunshine or a chill of apprehension regarding the Republican party. Cantor hosted with a Democrat, Representative Bobby Scott a “town hall meeting that wasn’t”. There was no talk of death panels, no illegal alien rants, and no NAZI emblems denigrating “libruls” and the President. Cantor and Scott were there to discuss health care. Health Care? Eric Cantor? He also had acording to the report, words for his Republican peers, “Stop the revivial stuff and let’s talk”. Many in his audience of about 250 people were not happy, they came expecting to be able to perform as they have in town hall meetings all across the nation. But no,,, Cantor and the moderator, the publisher of the Richmond Times Dispatch, all pretty much held the cat calls, shouts and rude overtalk to, get this, ZERO.

Folks, there were two things that crossed my mind while I was reading this article. The first was that some alien being had come to Earth and taken over Cantor’s body and mind. The second, and even more scary was that this was a big plan by the GOP to blunt the lousy impression they have made on the American people over the past several years, leading to their back to back losses in congressional elections and culminating with the loss of the White House as well. Chills ran up and down my spine as I took this thought to another level, that the GOP was putting on a blitz of “niceness” to convince folks that they had learned their lesson and should be given another chance at the reins of power.

Heaven Forfend!!! Simply look as what the GOP was able to accomplish in just two presidential terms. Taking the nation from one of prosperous, jobs building, 401(k) gaining economy to an economy and jobs picture that was one step away from the abyss of the Great Depression.

Do we really want to trust them to be repentful and deserving of another shot at destroying the nation and it’s people?

Well, Not this Cantankerous old Coot.

They all, as a great lady Helen Philpot says, need to sit down and shut up for a few more years.

Good psot, Harv. I too tend to anlyze things the way you have here, always suspicious of even the “good” moves that are made by anybody at anytime. Especially when it comes to the Republican party in its current state.

It would be nice to believe they want to redeem themselves, but the cynical side of me tends to think as you do, it’s a ploy. After the fight, the policeman comes, as my mom used to say. They behaved rudely and unacceptably and now they want to paint themseves as kinder and gentler. The nice-i-fied attitude is scarier than the really nasty one! NO I’m not fooled either. But I’ll keep an open mind and see what they can do to act more civilized, as long as it’s genuine. Not holding my breath just the same.

Glad you’re all having a wonderful time in Virginia!!

As they say in Operatic terms,”The fat lady hasn’t sang yet”, lets see how they Vote on health Care Legislation. The Democrats have left their rear flank vulnerable, maybe the Repugs will Vote for “Single Payer”,( Oh Make my day!!!)

ET, I agree and there is no way I would ever trust another republican politician. They are all crooks and liars. Not giving the democrat politicians any break either.

    Kirk,
I wold love to hear that Fat Lady Singing especially songs about the new Single Payer system in the USA. Some day, hopefully, if we all keep on pushing we might see this nation join the rest of the world with a decent health care access system.

Not going to hold my breath, however.

New to this Blog site. I can’t believe that there aren’t more experienced people out there who are disgusted with BOTH parties. The Democrates in their effort to reform healthcare did very little to change big Pharma or to have tort reform to bring down healthcare costs. The Democrats are afraid of the lawyers.

    Joni,
Actually there are a lot of people on our forum who are no happy with either party’s performance. And there are many, who believe that there are additional components that should be added to a health care REFORM bill. Unfortunately, the current bills under consideration are not health care reform, they are focused on the insurance industry.

As for democrats being afraid of lawyers? Not quite, considering that the majority of the democrats in congress as well as the republicans are all lawyers. The idea of tort reform is rather silly at a federal level. That is a state issue. However, most republican conservatives are heavily into states rights EXCEPT when they are not!

It is our humble opinion that the Democratic majority in the congress at this point, should simply kill the current bill, bring forth the HR-676 bill that has been in committee for several years and pass it with a reconcilliation action. Then have it be implemented immediately.

Not familiar with HR-676, there is a link to the actual bill, plus we have several posts in this senior citizens blog that address the legislation.

As you may or may not know, this blog is part of the Senior Citizens Consortium organization and we also host a forum of discussion topics. If you are interested, check out the forum a link is on our main home page in red font.

    Thanks for stopping by,
    Executive Director, SCC

Seems as though they don’t think before they act, doing what THEY feel is “good” and skipping the point to look at the whole picture.
